作品紹介 003 「海の記憶」

1998年横浜ベイシェラトンホテル＆タワーズの壁画を手掛けた、その年の12月、イタリアの中北部（トスカーナ地方からローマ周辺にかけて）の中世山岳都市をめぐるスケッチのツアーに参加させていただいた。その中でタルクイーニアという海沿いの街に行ったとき、海から吹き上げる「風」が、どこか懐かしく感じた。それは子供のころ海辺で遊んでいるときに海から吹き上げてくる、独特のうみかぜと似ていた。自分は海沿いの街で育ったのだな。と改めて感じた。それから「海」の作品を自分の中心的な作品と位置づけ、2000年から「海の記憶」と題したシリーズを手掛ける。

海を描こうと思った動機としては、ほかにも理由がある。ひとつめは、抽象画を描いていた時に手のストロークを使うようになり、それが青海波のように見えてきたり、それ以前に描いていた「化石の」シリーズも「海」に関連するタイトルやモチーフが多かったということも「海の記憶」シリーズを描くきっかけにもなってる。

In 1998, after creating a mural for the Yokohama Bay Sheraton Hotel & Towers, I participated in a sketching tour of medieval mountain towns in north-central Italy (from Tuscany to the Rome area) in December of the same year. During one such trip, I visited the coastal town of Tarquinia, where I felt a sense of nostalgia for the wind blowing up from the sea. It was similar to the distinctive sea breezes I would hear as a child playing on the beach. It reminded me that I grew up in a coastal town. Since then, I've positioned sea-themed artwork as my core practice, and in 2000 I began working on a series titled "Memories of the Sea."

There were other reasons that motivated me to paint the sea. First, while I was creating abstract paintings, I began using hand strokes, which began to resemble Seigaiha waves. Also, many of my earlier "Fossil" series had titles and motifs related to the sea, which also inspired me to create the "Memories of the Sea" series.
