I wonder when I started sketching cherry blossoms. Around the time the mural at the Yokohama Bay Sheraton was being completed in 1998, I remember creating a landscape painting of three cherry blossom trees and the moon in winter. The season for sketching cherry blossoms is very short. I can't sketch them every day, from when they first start to bloom, through to full bloom, and when the leaves fall, so I can only make a few sketches. In 2010, I was able to see the Yamataka Jindai Sakura, said to be the oldest cherry tree in Japan, and in 2011, for the first time, I visited Kyoto's Maruyama Park, Daigoji Temple, and Yoshino. Before I knew it, quite a lot of time had passed since then. I have a unique emotional attachment to cherry blossoms that is different from other flowers. I wonder how many more cherry blossom paintings I can create.
